They live in perfect harmony, take care of the interior decoration of the house and take care of the tiny baby Katie. However, a terrible tragedy occurs in their lives: a small child dies from respiratory arrest (the notorious sudden infant death syndrome, a rare occurrence).
The accident that took away a little girl from the Maynards divides the family’s life into “before” and “after”. Each member experiences grief in its own way. Jack leaves work (he is an elementary school art teacher, any contact with children is especially painful) and gives up. Once the head of the family, a man tries to commit suicide and, after failure, goes to a psychiatric clinic.
Lily’s feelings are what the heroine completely gave up on. She cares about everything that happens around her: the price tags on goods (Lily works as a commodity specialist in a supermarket), the condition of her husband, to which she drives to the clinic several times a week, and the weeds in the backyard. The only thing that remains untouched and, as a result, unworked is the grief of loss, which the heroine hid in the far corner of her soul.
